Why "Save Image As" Often Fails
The GIF format dates from 1987, and its files are huge.
So most big sites quietly swap your GIF for something lighter: a short looping MP4 video or an animated WebP. It still looks like a GIF on the page, but right-click either saves a still frame, a .webp file, or offers no "Save image" option at all.

Not sure what you saved? Drop the file into the Image Format Detector. It reads the real format from the file itself, so a WebP named .gif cannot fool it.
3 Ways to Download a GIF From Any Website
1. Right-Click and Save
Right-click the GIF and choose Save image as (Chrome, Edge) or Save Image (Firefox, Safari).
Check the file name before you click Save. If it ends in .gif, you are done. If it ends in .webp, .jpg or .png, you got a substitute - use method 3.
2. Open the Image on Its Own
Right-click and choose Open image in new tab, or Copy image address and paste it into a new tab.
With only the animation on screen, press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac). This skips the page around it, and sometimes reveals the real .gif link.
3. Paste the Link Into a GIF Downloader
- Copy the link: the image address, the post link, or simply the page address.
- Paste it into the GIF Downloader.
- Pick the format under Save as: the original GIF, an MP4 (5 to 10 times smaller), an animated WebP, PNG frames or just the first frame.

X (Twitter)
X turns every uploaded GIF into an MP4 video, so there is no GIF file to right-click.
- Tap Share on the post and choose Copy link.
- Paste it into the X GIF Downloader.
- Save it as MP4 (smallest, sharpest) or convert it to a real GIF.
For regular videos with sound, use the Twitter Video Downloader.
Most GIFs posted to Reddit are stored as MP4 on v.redd.it; a few old ones are real GIFs on i.redd.it.
Copy the post link and paste it into the Reddit GIF Downloader. It keeps the sound when there is one, and saves whole galleries as a ZIP.
Animated pins are short videos. Copy the pin link (pin.it links work too) and use the Pinterest Downloader - it can save the MP4 or turn it into a GIF.
Imgur, Tumblr and Discord
- Imgur: a link ending in .gifv is really an MP4. Paste it into the GIF Downloader to get a GIF, or change .gifv to .gif in the address.
- Tumblr: often serves WebP. Paste the image or post link into the GIF Downloader, or turn a saved WebP into a GIF with WebP to GIF.
- Discord: GIFs people uploaded save normally with right-click. GIFs sent from the GIF picker are Tenor links - right-click, Copy Link, and use the Tenor Downloader.
On iPhone and Android

- In Safari: touch and hold the GIF, then tap Save to Photos. It keeps moving in the Animated album in Photos.
- In apps (X, Reddit, Instagram): tap Share, then Copy Link, and paste it into the GIF Downloader in Safari.
- To keep the exact file: touch and hold, tap Download Linked File, and it lands in the Files app with its original format.
Android
- In Chrome: touch and hold the GIF and tap Download image.
- In apps: Share, Copy link, then paste into the GIF Downloader in Chrome.
- Playing it: Google Photos and most gallery apps animate GIFs. If yours shows a still image, open the file in Chrome.

Saving a GIF for your own use and sharing it in chats is what GIF sites are built for, and it is widely accepted.
Most reaction GIFs come from films, TV shows and music videos, though, and those clips are still copyrighted. Using them in ads, products or paid content is a different matter.
